MARES & GELDINGS

Dottie.jpg

Dottie

Grade Miniature Pony

Mare

Dottie, another of our blue eye/brown eye equine is very timid and nervous. She had little sight out of her blue eye and is wary of the dark shadows she sees. She is a sweet girl but is difficult to catch due to her uncertainty. She loves to be groomed (once caught) and tends to be a loner. She does like to eat near Ollie or Westley and cannot figure out if she likes the two Highland cattle or not!

King with Logo.jpg

King

Tennessee Walker

Gelding

King is the boss of the feed line! He makes sure everyone goes to their correct feed divider or he will let them know he is not pleased. He has the best and most cooperative personality and is always ready to please. King loves to be bathed and he usually is seen hanging out with Westley and Misty.

Lacey.jpg

Lacey

Quarter

Mare

What can one say about Lacey? She is a flirt! Any new gelding that arrives, you can be sure Lacey will be the first to welcome him and to cozy up and graze alongside her new boyfriend. Lacey likes to be groomed but does not like to be stalled or alone. She has a steady personality and never seems to make a problem in the herd…until a new gelding is on the farm! She is very alert around dogs since she survived a vicious attack by two dogs prior to coming to the sanctuary.

Lady the Mustang.jpg

Lady

Mustang, White Sands

Mare

Lady is a prima donna and thinks that the world revolves around her (and Murphy.)  She can be the sweetest mare and then turn on a dime if she feels another horse is getting too close to the attention she craves. She is smart and is more than willing to learn. She has a delicate composition and is very much a beautiful girl. She can be food aggressive due to her past.

Misty (2).jpg

Misty

Paint

Mare

Misty is our oldest horse at 30 years of age and there is absolutely nothing anyone can say negative about her. She is gentle of spirit, loyal friend to Westly, and has a beautiful canter when she is feeling her oats! Misty, at times, craves solitude and can be seen off to one side of the pasture away from the herd. During these times, you will find her gazing off into the woods watching the deer or just looking off into the distance, peaceful and serene. Misty teeth are all but worn away, so she enjoys her softened feed and ground-up hay.

Murphy the Mustang.jpg

Murphy

Mustang, White Sands

Gelding

Murphy is always trying to control the back paddock. He is a womanizer and loves Lady and Nugget. Murphy is under training and is just beginning to be ridden. He is smart and wise beyond his years, but he always wants to please. He loves whoever is going to give him his meal!

Nugget.JPG

Nugget

Quarter

Mare

Nugget is a calm and gentle horse. She loves to be groomed with a soft brush but does not like to be in a stall or alone. She is seldom far from one of the geldings whose company she prefers over the mares. Both Nugget and Lacey are flirts and she has lately showered her attention on the wild Mustang, Murphy. Nugget often neighs when she hears the feed bucket being filled and enjoys a crisp carrot as a treat.

Ollie.JPG

Ollie

Belgian Draft

Gelding

Ollie is a massive 19 hands tall! That means at his withers (shoulder) he is roughly 6’3” tall. Although he is a giant of a Belgian, he has a childlike and somewhat goofy personality. He loves to take gates off their hinges, destroy downspouts and always must flip every feed container off the fence. Ollie wants to be near to anyone who will show him attention. Although Ollie is a giant of a horse, he is scared of running chickens and baby donkeys!

Pickles.jpg

Pickles

Shetland/Grade Miniature Pony

Gelding

Pickles cannot get enough love and is constantly wanting to only be with people.  He is often found “helping” volunteers with chores and wants to be cuddled and groomed 24 hours a day. He is a gentle soul, loves to drive the cart and is often found hanging with Ollie or Charger. Pickles is an easy keeper and enjoys peppermint or butterscotch treats the best.

Trigger (2).jpg

Trigger

Saddlebred/Arabian

Gelding

Trigger is one of three animals at the sanctuary with one blue (i.e., glass) eye and one brown eye. Dottie, one of the mini ponies, and Rowdy, one of the sanctuary dogs, share this trait with Trigger. Trigger has a beautiful composition and a loving heart. He wants as much attention as he can get and often follows whoever is in the paddock or pasture working. Trigger can get extremely playful at times and must be reminded of what good manners are around humans!

Westley (2).jpg

Westley

Thoroughbred/Quarter

Gelding

Westley is our most muscular and well-proportioned of all the geldings. He is a beauty to observe. Westley loves to have apple or peppermint treats. His favorite pasture mate is Misty who arrived just before Westley. They bonded at first site. Every so often Westley will via for feed boss position against King. He usually wins, but after a few days he allows King to return to being the feed police.
